It’s that time of year again: School is starting, Halloween decorations have appeared on store shelves, and every Apple nerd you know is begging you not to buy an iPhone. Why? Because Apple is about to announce the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro, with all the new bells and whistles that come with a next-generation smartphone.
Apple announced Wednesday that its next big event will start at 10 a.m. PDT (1 p.m. EDT) on Wednesday, Sept. 7, with no other details given. That might be a bit confusing: If the company’s announcement only says “Apple Event,” with no descriptions, agenda, or even hints, how do we know for sure Apple is planning to unveil the iPhone 14 lineup on that day?
It’s a bit of an open secret. While Apple has given us no official indication that it’s coming out with new iPhones next month, let alone at all, historical precedent, supplemented by leaks and rumors, makes it safe to say this September event is really an iPhone 14 party.
What is Apple expected to announce on Sept. 7?
Based on that speculation, we’re expecting four new iPhones this year, similar to recent product cycles. However, things are changing: Evidence suggests Apple is dropping the iPhone mini from the lineup, and is instead adding a second, non-Pro “Max” option in its place. Now, the lineup will (tentatively) include:
- iPhone 14 (6.1-inch display)
- iPhone 14 Max (6.7-inch display)
- iPhone 14 Pro (6.1-inch display)
- iPhone 14 Pro Max (6.7-inch display)
The biggest changes are rumored to be coming to the Pro iPhones. These devices could swap the “notch” cutout at the top of the display for a combination of “pill” and “punch-hole” camera cutouts instead. These cutouts will take up much less screen space than the current notch. These models are also expected to see an upgrade in camera quality, from 12 to 48 megapixels, possibly with an 8K video recording option. It’s currently unclear whether all the iPhones will get the new A16 chip, or whether it will be reserved for the Pro models.

The iPhone 14 isn’t the only new product likely on the docket. Apple is also expected to kick off iOS 16’s official release, as well as announce the Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Pro, which could bring a fresh redesign to the brand.
